Upscale Living in Cherry Creek – Denver, Colorado
Less than ten minutes outside of downtown Denver lies the neighborhood of Cherry Creek. The area located out side of Denver became famous in the late 1850s when gold was reported to be found in the Cherry Creek area. A rush of prospectors flooded the area. The Cherry Creek neighborhood is south of Denver. With beautiful homes lining the streets, it is hard to imagine the amount of urban development that lies within. The historic Cherry Creek borders the neighborhood on the south, while Sixth Avenue runs along the north side and leads all the way through Lakewood, to the west. Colorado Boulevard borders the eastern side of the Cherry Creek neighborhood and is lined with numerous restaurants and businesses. University Boulevard lines the west side. The neighborhood is not a long drive from the Rocky Mountains, either. Within a few hours, you could easily visit Mt. Evans (alt. 14,260 ft.) or Rocky Mountain National park, just outside of Estes Park. Many residents partake in mountain climbing and hiking during the summer months and brandish their skis during winter. Many places offer Ski Passes that give residents discounted lift prices. With multiple skate parks, parents can easily drop their kids off and enjoy the day shopping.
Within Cherry Creek are two major commercial hubs. First, the Cherry Creek Shopping Center runs along a majority of First Avenue. Stores within include Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, and Macy's. Also within the Cherry Creek Shopping Center is Kona Grill, where their cooks put an interesting twist on American cuisine. Happy hour consists of half priced appetizers and pizzas, as well as their famous $5 sake bombs. Across the street from the Cherry Creek Shopping Center sits Cherry Creek North. Covering 16 city-blocks, it is lined with unique stores and restaurants. With such eateries as Hapa Sushi Grill & Sake Bar, the possibilities of getting a fantastic dinner are endless. Their menu contains traditional Japanese dishes blended with different styles of cooking, bringing a new take on Japanese food to your plate. Though Cherry Creek North was the original home to Tattered Cover Book Store, they have moved to a location on Colfax Avenue in a renovated theater, but no fear! Tattered Cover is a short drive from Cherry Creek so residents can still buy books in this amazing store.
Though real estate in Cherry Creek can be expensive, Townhomes and Condominiums seem to be the most popular places to live in the neighborhood. The median price of houses in the Cherry Creek neighborhood is $600,000, most residents live in townhouses and condos. Living in Cherry Creek gives residents easy access to the Denver Country Club as well as a number of parks, including Cheesman Park, City Park, and Pulaski Park. A number of residents can be seen jogging down the sidewalks that run along side Cherry Creek. The census in 2000 reported that the population of the Cherry Creek neighborhood to be 5,028. Average price of a single family dwelling was listed as $692,764. Average income for the neighborhood lies between $50,000-$74,999.
In fact, the Cherry Creek stream and paths run all the way from downtown Denver to the outlying suburbs. Known as the Highline Canal, this popular path network is close to 22 miles long andis used for biking, running, walking, and even horsebackriding.
Some people are confused by the term Cherry Creek. It refers to the stream, which runs through, not only this Cherry Creek shopping center area, but alsothroughout thesoutheast metropolitan area.
For example, the Cherry Creek school system is located in Arapahoe County, some seven miles south east of this area. Housing areas in the suburbs that feed into the Cherry Creek school district have the name "Cherry Creek" in them but, in fact, are located in Arapahoe County.
It is also the home for fashionable, luxury housing ranging from condominiums to town homes, and even single-family detached homes. This upscale neighborhood is a self-contained oasis for residents consisting of art galleries, coffee houses, bars, restaurants, shopping, and even the newly completed GE Marriott Hotel. For some, it reminds them of Georgetown in Washington, DC, with a tremendous variety of eateries and entertainment venues. Don’t miss Elway’s, owned by former Broncos’ Quarterback John Elway. It’s a great steakhouse and watering hole next door to the fashion mall.
In the summertime the Cherry Creek Arts Festival,held over the Fourth of July weekend, is very popular and brings crowds into the fashionable area to celebrate artistic and musical work. Performers and artists attend from all over the world.
